「神道」を英語で説明しよう

「仏教」は、約2500年前にゴーダマ・シッダッタ（釈迦）が現在のインド北部ガンジス川中流域で提唱し、各地に広まり現在も続く世界宗教です。人間の生とは儚く苦しいものだということを悟り、数々の苦境から解き放たれる法を説いたのが始まりです。近世では広く釈尊を開祖とする宗教のことを指します。仏陀とはサンスクリット語で「目覚めた人」「覚者」「真理を悟った人」を意味します。

さて、それでは「仏教」を英語で説明してみましょう。

Buddhism is a doctrine^*1 "Shakuson" preached^*2 approximately 2,500 years ago. "Shakuson" means the noble person of the Shaka tribe^*3 in India. "Shaka" is the original meaning of the word "Shakuson". Shakuson's real name was "Siddhartha Gautama". He was born as the prince of Shaka tribe. There he saw aging, disease and death. He felt that human's life is fragile^*4 and painful, and pursued^*5 how humans get released from those pains. Shakuson was spiritually awakened with all kinds of the training, and was called "Buddha". Buddha means "the person who awakened".

　^*2preached: preach（説教する）の過去形
　^*3tribe: 部族、一族
　^*4fragile: 儚い（はかない）
　^*5pursued: pursue（追求する）の過去形
